This project focuses on the autobiographical graphic novel by Alison Bechdel called Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Throughout my exploration of this text, I discovered that while the story is given meaning through elevated diction and engaging illustrations, it is the message that lies beneath the text that has earned Bechdel such a dazzled name in the world of modern literature. A story about the coming-of-age struggle, in an environment that stifles any effort to pursue true self discovery, Fun Home orchestrates beautifully the inner turmoil that comes with abiding by societal expectations as well as how important and freeing it is to take the plunge and dig into what lies below the surface. By researching the background that inspired the story, common themes that were woven throughout, the musical adaptation of the text, and the interactions that various individuals had with it, I found myself asking the question alongside a young Bechdel, "What would happen if we spoke the truth?" As I venture into the various sections of this site, I hope to expose some of that answer. When we seek the truth, what will we find? What will we be faced with? What beauty lies beneath the lies we force ourselves to believe?
